Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 9th – 17th February 2010…

Team Helly Hansen-Prunesco are pleased to announce that the winning team from the 2009 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race will be returning to the “Land of Adventure Dreams”. Nicola Macleod has just been crowned World Adventure Racing Champion 2009, and will be joined by Mark Humphrey, Bruce Duncan and Andy Wilson to tackle the +600km race in February.

After winning the 2009 event the team had vowed to head back only this time having a little more time to prepare, unlike previously two weeks prep!

The Race:

The 2010 edition will be held on the island of Tierra del Fuego, one of Patagonia’s most southern and remote areas. The expedition race will cover more than 600 km across the Land of the Fire and will become the most southern race in the history of adventure racing, taking competitors through the majestic white-capped mountains of the Darwin Range and the freezing waters of legendary Beagle Channel.

Disciplines:

Navigation: After the previous event navigation is key, the team were quite amazed to receive satellite photographs as maps for navigation, some even included some clouds. This really does make you appreciate the true wilderness of this event as teams will be trekking and biking over areas never mapped or even seen before.

Trekking/Rope Skills: With several trekking stages during the event, teams will cross a variety of terrains from vast open areas to rocky clefs, thick un-touched ancient forests and some beautiful mountain ranges. Rope sections will connect different stage transitions and a good head for height and rope skills are required.

Mountain Biking: Long sections will take the teams across some wild open expanses of land connecting stages through out the race.

Sea Kayaking: Using double sea kayaks teams will venture across rivers, streams open glacial waters and may even have to portage through dense jungle to proceed through the course.

Race Founder and Director, Stjepan Pavicic, said: “The value of Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race is in presenting not only a physical and mental challenge, but also a message: we must preserve this remote and pristine region of Chilean Patagonia. I’m proud it has become recognized in both respects.”
